DESCRIPTION:Body Focused Repetitive Behaviours (BFRBs) are a group of complex mental health disorders that are characterised by the uncontrollable urge to pull\, pick\, scratch \, cut or bite ones own skin \, hair or nails. These behaviours are not simply bad habits\, they are often chronic\, difficult to control and associated with high levels of emotional distress.  They can have profound impact on everyday life\, including work\, education\, relationships and general social functioning. \n\nBFRB Con 2026 will bring together clinicians\, researchers and people with lived experience to support knowledge exchange\, professional development and community-building around Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviours (BFRBs). DESCRIPTION:Recent research shows that 80% of professionals will experience ‘imposter phenomenon’\, often referred to as ‘imposter syndrome’\, at some point in their careers. Whilst it is prevalent\, this doesn’t stop it from being debilitating and disempowering as it can be associated with decreased job performance or burnout (Bravata et al 2020). \nThis workshop explores practical tips for managing imposter phenomenon\, from both an individual and systemic lens. \nIn this 3-hour virtual workshop you will: \n\nappreciate the often systemic nature of imposter phenomenon by understanding what in the system or culture is (possibly inadvertently) causing you to feel like an imposter. This event is part of the ANTITHESES platform\, funded by Wellcome. \nThe panel discussion will be chaired by Professor Ilina Singh. \nPanel Speakers \nWe’re delighted to welcome: \n\nDr David Crepaz-Keay\nProfessor Sir Simon Wessely\nAn additional speaker to be announced\n\nSpecial guests: The NeurOx YPAG \nAbout the event \nTransformations in the concept and sources of mental health ‘expertise’ are impacting how we think about diagnosis\, identity\, need and treatment. At the same time\, the UK is experiencing an unparalleled surge in people seeking mental health support\, with lengthy waitlists and significant inequalities in access to services. \nOur public event asks: What kinds of expertise should we trust to identify\, support and treat mental health needs? Speakers will address some difficult challenges: Is traditional medical expertise still relevant in an age of self-diagnosis through social media? How should other forms of expertise\, e.g. AI chatbots and lived experience\, figure in how we design future mental health support and policy? SUMMARY:Webinar: Beyond the bump – How managing blood pressure around pregnancy shapes your future health
DESCRIPTION:The NIHR BRC: Oxford is holding a free online public talk on Tuesday 21 July at 2pm \nMany women experience high blood pressure during pregnancy\, and it is increasingly recognised as an early warning sign for health problems later in life. Conditions such as gestational hypertension and preeclampsia are known to increase a woman’s longer-term risk of stroke\, heart disease and dementia. Yet most women receive little follow-up once their baby is born. \nRecent studies by University of Oxford researchers have shown that\, by monitoring and carefully managing their blood pressure after giving birth\, new mothers could cut their risk of future heart disease and strokes – and protect their long‑term brain health. \nThe studies\, supported by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre: Oxford\, have led to the creation of a postpartum cardiac risk clinic in the Oxford Heart Centre. \nThis talk will explore how pregnancy is a window into future health\, giving an opportunity to improve long-term care and help prevent future cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline in women. Her research focuses on the effect of high blood pressure on the brain\, especially during and after pregnancy.

DESCRIPTION:April marks Autism Acceptance Month\, an important opportunity to move beyond awareness and focus on meaningful inclusion.   \nAs understanding of neurodiversity grows\, so too does recognition of the need for research that better reflects and supports neurodivergent communities. Yet despite increasing attention\, neurodivergent people remain under-represented in many areas of mental health research.  \nJoin us for a special podcast-style panel conversation featuring 3 expert brain and mental health researchers who will explore two complementary perspectives.   \nThe discussion will consider how neurodivergent participants can be more effectively included within broader mental and brain health research\, as well as the importance of designing research projects specifically tailored for neurodivergent communities from the outset.  \nTogether\, we will reflect on the opportunities\, challenges and responsibilities involved in building more inclusive research practices. How can we design studies that are accessible\, respectful and responsive? What does genuine inclusion look like in practice?  \nSpeakers:  \n\nProfessor Clare Mackay is a Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Oxford whose research uses neuroimaging to understand risk for psychiatric and neurodegenerative conditions\, alongside leading translational work through the Oxford Centre for Human Brain Activity and the NIHR Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre (OH BRC). More recently\, she has developed a significant academic and advocacy focus on body‑focused repetitive behaviours\, including trichotillomania\, working to improve understanding\, reduce stigma and develop better interventions for this under‑served community. \n\n\nDr Eri Ichijo is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Oxford University Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging . Her research aims to improve our understanding of pain experience in the autistic population. She is particularly interested in exploring the relationship between the cognitive modulation of pain and individual differences. \n\n\nDr Alice Quinton is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Oxford’s Department of Experimental Psychology. Her research focuses on interventions for anxiety-related mental imagery (or “flashforwards”) with a particular interest in the experiences of neurodivergent young adults. \n\nQuestions will be put to the speakers by event host Andreia Costa\, Project Manager for Training & Career Development at OH BRC and Chair of the Neurodiversity & Disability Working Group at University of Oxford’s Department of Psychiatry. Andreia is an advocate for the neurodivergent community and hosts the Neurodiverse Voices Podcast.   \n  \nThere are 100 spaces available in the Lecture Theatre\, which will be allocated on a first come basis. \nPlease use this public talk registration form to sign up for a place. \n  \nCoffee is available in the common room from 5:30pm and the event will start promptly at 6:00pm. \nAny questions email: Sophie.Ray@oxfordhealth.nhs.uk

SUMMARY:New hope for bipolar disorder: the evidence you need now
DESCRIPTION:Join us on World Bipolar Day for an evidence-based webinar on bipolar disorder\, hosted by the Mental Elf. \n\n\n\n\nBipolar disorder affects approximately 1-2% of the population and is characterised by recurrent episodes of mania or hypomania and depression. It’s associated with significant functional impairment\, high rates of co-morbidity\, and reduced life expectancy. \nDespite effective treatments being available\, many people experience delayed diagnosis\, inadequate treatment\, and frequent relapses. Access to specialist care is inconsistent across the UK. Long-term outcomes remain poor for many\, with residual symptoms and social disability common even between episodes. \nSystem-level barriers\, including late diagnosis in primary care\, limited access to psychological therapies\, and poor integration between physical and mental health services\, prevent people from receiving optimal care. \nThis webinar is delivered in collaboration with the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Mental Health Translational Research Collaboration (MH-TRC) Mission Mood Disorder Network. \nMore information and registration on Eventbrite.
