Oxford Health Clinical Research Facility hosts students for In2scienceUK placement

Recently, the Oxford Health Clinical Research Facility (OH CRF) welcomed two A-Level students as part of their In2scienceUK work placement.

In2scienceUK offers young people from low socioeconomic backgrounds an insight into Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) careers in a bid to increase diversity and inclusion in the sector.

Programmes run through In2scienceUK leverages the skills, expertise, and passion of STEM professionals and researchers by offering work placements, skills sessions, career workshops and more.

The students, Kalai and Dominque, took part in a range of activities, facilitated by OH CRF staff. Activities included exploring a publication on internet gaming disorder, practicing taking blood on a fake arm and practicing rating scales, questionnaires and interviews that are used on patients to gauge levels of symptoms of conditions, for example a pain rating scale.

They were also invited into the OH CRF lab to learn about the equipment, discuss career pathways with colleagues and review example CVs.

Kalai and Dominque were also invited to shadow a pre-screening visit with a research participant.

Kalai said: “I’ve really enjoyed my placement.  I was able to observe visits and have gained valuable insight into how clinical research is carried out. To be able to understand the importance of the studies and seeing their impact within the healthcare sector is an inspiration for the future. This experience has made me more confident about pursuing a career in science.”

Dominique said: “It was interesting to witness what the research team do and the samples and data they obtained in order for dosing to happen the next day. It was also helpful to learn about the process of patient visits and how the team communicated and dealt with participants.

“Because everyone was so patient and kind, I felt comfortable to ask questions, complete sessions and activities with confidence and really made the most out of this placement. The team went above and beyond to ensure I had the best experience at OH CRF.”

Abigail Roberts, Research Nurse at OH CRF said: “I really enjoyed hosting the In2science placement, the students were inquisitive and enthusiastic, and it is always fun to introduce people to our research and help them gain important experiences for their own career development.

“Their questions were a refreshing reminder of how exciting and important our work is.”
