Research Design and Methodology in Mental Health
We have developed a new, user-friendly, and practical course on research methods for all staff (clinical and administrative) based at the NIHR Oxford Health Clinical Research Facility (CRF). This course is specifically tailored to the staff working at our CRF, and it ranges from more theoretical and methodological topics to practical issues involved in the daily research activity at the CRF.
Teaching is delivered by interactive seminars with group tasks and problem-solving, every 2 months. The approach is multidisciplinary, starting with an explanation of core knowledge and building on real-world examples to develop skills and confidence. Team members are encouraged to bring questions and research issues to the group. As the programme continues, we will be using staff feedback to evaluate the structure and content of the course and develop this further. Date of this seminar TBC.
In2Science

In2Science are a charity whose aim is to unlock the potential of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and boost diversity and inclusion in the sector to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) industries.
They promote diversity in STEM by facilitating work experience placements for sixth former’s who come from more disadvantaged backgrounds and this year, OH CRF hosted a 6th form student on a summer work placement. The aim of offering placements is to provide young people with an invaluable opportunity that will help shape their future.
Feedback from this years student was very positive:
“Katy and Abi have been amazing hosts. I’ve really enjoyed my time at OHCRF, their warmth and support made the experience even better. From the start, they made me feel incredibly comfortable, whether it was guiding me through the labs or helping me understand complicated medications. They were always available to guide me through the placement, encouraging me to ask questions and actively engage with the work. It was fascinating to gain unique insights into the depths of clinical research and see the extensive behind the scenes work that goes into it. What stood out to me was how determined and hardworking everyone was, fully committed to advancing their field. This opportunity also allowed me to connect with people in various roles, offering different perspectives that challenged my own thinking and helped me develop a more critical approach. Hearing about the developments in psychiatric research, both scientifically and practically, was immensely helpful and inspiring, making this entire experience truly memorable.”
We look forward to continued work with In2Science in 2025.
