Oxford Health launches Improving Black Health Outcomes Bioresource

30th June 2026

A new research programme dedicated to improving the health outcomes of Black communities has been launched at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust.

The Improving Black Health Outcomes (IBHO) Bioresource is a new research programme dedicated to studying health conditions and their unique impacts on UK Black communities.

Black communities are currently underrepresented in genetic research, which limits our understanding of health conditions and reduces the effectiveness of treatments for these populations.

This study aims to build a dedicated research resource focusing on individuals from Black communities to improve research, prevention strategies, and access to healthcare. Over 6,000 volunteers have already consented to take part.

We are inviting individuals aged 16+ from Black ethnic backgrounds (Black African, Black Caribbean, Black British), as well as individuals with Sickle Cell (an inherited blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become misshapen, which can block blood flow and lead to pain, anaemia and other health complications or Thalassaemia (an inherited blood disorder that reduces the body’s ability to produce healthy haemoglobin, often causing anaemia and fatigue), regardless of ethnicity.

The IBHO Bioresource is part of the National Institute for Health and Care Research Bioresource and is being delivered by Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust’s Mental Health Research Delivery Team.

For more information, contact the research team on [email protected] or call 07766 904 361.
