From Wednesday 29 October 2025, Oxford will introduce a temporary congestion charge to help manage traffic during the extended closure of Botley Road. This short-term measure is designed to keep the city moving, making journeys quicker, more connected, and more reliable.
Visitors to Oxford should be aware that the temporary congestion charge applies to cars and motorhomes entering key parts of the city, including popular routes like Hythe Bridge Street and St Clements Street, with a daily fee of £5.
This may affect travel plans, especially for those unfamiliar with the zones or payment process, so it’s advisable to check the Oxfordshire County Council website in advance for maps, exemptions, and how to pay.
What is the charge?
- £5 per day for cars and motorhomes without a valid permit.
- The charge applies once per day, regardless of how many times you pass through the charge zones.
How to pay
- Pay online or by phone by midnight the day after you travel.
- You can also pay in advance.
Where does it apply?
The charge covers six key locations:
- Hythe Bridge Street
- St Cross Road
- St Clements Street
- Thames Street
- Marston Ferry Road (peak hours only 7am – 9am and 3pm – 6pm)
- Hollow Way (peak hours only 7am – 9am and 3pm – 6pm)
Charging times vary slightly, but most locations operate 7am–7pm, Monday to Sunday.
Who is affected?
- The charge applies only to cars and motorhomes (DVLA class M1).
- Vans, motorbikes, buses, and other vehicles are exempt.
- Electric vehicles are not exempt.
Permits and exemptions
If you live in Oxfordshire or fall into certain groups (such as Blue Badge holders, health and care workers, or unpaid carers), you may be eligible for free permits or day passes.
